How Art Changed My Life
If someone had told me a few years ago that I would spend hours every day painting fantasy landscapes, glowing forests, and magical worlds, I probably wouldn't have believed them.
Life has a way of taking us down unexpected paths. Mine certainly did.
I'm a recovering addict, and recovery has been one of the hardest—and most rewarding—journeys of my life. Like many people in recovery, I had to learn how to rebuild not only my life but also how I spent my time, where I found joy, and what gave me purpose.
That's when I found painting.
I first picked up a paintbrush because I wanted to try something creative. I didn't expect it to become such an important part of my life. At the beginning, I knew very little about painting. Every tree looked awkward, every rock seemed out of place, and I questioned almost everything I created.
But I kept going.
Every painting taught me something new. Every mistake became another lesson instead of another reason to quit.
Eventually, I discovered gouache, and everything changed.
I fell in love with its rich colors, soft matte finish, and the way it lets me build a painting layer by layer. Learning to work with both acrylic gouache and traditional gouache opened up a whole new world of possibilities. Today, creating magical forests, moonlit landscapes, glowing lanterns, enchanted dragons, and peaceful woodland scenes has become one of my greatest passions.
Painting has given me something I never expected.
It has given me peace.
When I'm in my studio, hours can pass without me noticing. My mind slows down, my focus shifts to the brush in my hand, and the worries of the day fade into the background. Every new painting is a chance to learn, improve, and create something that didn't exist before.
Recovery isn't just about leaving something behind. It's also about discovering something worth moving toward.
For me, that "something" is art.
I'm still learning. I still make mistakes. There are days when I repaint the same area several times before I'm happy with it. But every finished piece reminds me how far I've come—not only as an artist, but as a person.
My hope is that when someone looks at one of my paintings, they feel a sense of peace, wonder, or escape, even if it's only for a few moments. If my artwork can brighten someone's day or inspire them to begin their own creative journey, then every hour spent in the studio has been worthwhile.
If you're struggling with something in your own life, I hope my story reminds you that it's never too late to discover a new passion. Healing doesn't always happen all at once. Sometimes it begins with one small step, one brushstroke, one decision to keep going.
Thank you for visiting Gale's Art Studio and for being part of my journey. This is only the beginning, and I can't wait to share many more paintings—and many more stories—with you.
