Some paintings begin with a clear plan, while others grow from a single question.
For Hearthstone Hollow, that question was: What if the forest was quietly protecting a doorway that had been forgotten for centuries?
I wanted this painting to feel like the viewer had stumbled upon something ancient rather than something abandoned. The large weathered stone became the centerpiece of the composition, but instead of carving a traditional doorway, I imagined a glowing crystal portal nestled inside the rock itself. Its soft turquoise light spills into the surrounding forest, hinting that something magical still exists beyond what we can see.
To reinforce that feeling, I surrounded the stone with flowing water, moss-covered rocks, and long hanging vines. Nature hasn't hidden this place because it is dangerous—it has simply reclaimed it over time. The forest feels alive, peaceful, and quietly protective of whatever secrets the portal still holds.
The cool blues, greens, and turquoise tones were chosen to create a calm atmosphere instead of an ominous one. Rather than inviting fear, I wanted the painting to inspire curiosity. Is the doorway a gateway to another world? A forgotten sanctuary? Or perhaps one of several ancient places scattered throughout the enchanted world I continue to build through my paintings.
One of my favorite details is how the crystal catches the light. Although it is the brightest part of the painting, the surrounding plants, water, and moss all help guide your eye naturally toward it. Every layer was added with the goal of making the scene feel immersive, as though you could step onto the stones and walk toward the glowing entrance yourself.
Like all of my artwork, Hearthstone Hollow is completely hand-painted in gouache and is a one-of-a-kind original. My hope is that it encourages people to slow down, imagine what might exist beyond the ordinary, and remember that there is always room for mystery and wonder.
