Every painting begins with a question. For Lantern Keeper, mine was simple: What if there were someone whose only purpose was to keep the light burning for those who had lost their way?
When I sat down to paint this piece, I imagined a quiet forest where the sun had long since disappeared behind the trees. Instead of feeling dark or frightening, I wanted the scene to feel peaceful—a place where a single warm lantern could transform the entire atmosphere. That small light became the heart of the painting.
I've always been drawn to the contrast between cool moonlit blues and the warm glow of lantern light. Those colors create a sense of comfort and hope, and they're a combination I return to often in my work. As I built up each layer of gouache, I focused on letting the cool forest recede into the background while allowing the lantern's light to gently spill across the path, inviting the viewer to step forward.
One of my favorite things about painting fantasy scenes is that they leave room for imagination. Is the Lantern Keeper protecting the forest? Waiting for a traveler? Guiding someone home? There isn't one correct answer. I enjoy creating paintings that encourage each person to tell their own story.
Painting has become much more than a hobby for me. It began during my recovery journey and grew into a way of expressing hope, peace, and wonder. Every piece I create is a reminder that even in life's darkest moments, a little light can make all the difference.
