When I began Moonwell Relic, I wanted to create more than a glowing object in a forest. I wanted the painting to feel like the viewer had discovered something that had been hidden for a very long time.
The relic became the heart of the painting. I imagined it as an ancient structure that had once been important but was eventually forgotten. The forest continued growing around it, covering the stones with moss and wrapping roots and plants around its shape. Even after everything else had changed, the light inside it continued to glow.
I chose a mostly turquoise, blue and green palette because I wanted the scene to feel mysterious without becoming threatening. This is not meant to be a dangerous forest. It is quiet, ancient and protected.
The brightest area is concentrated inside the relic. I wanted that light to pull the eye immediately toward the center and then allow the surrounding shapes, textures and shadows to reveal themselves more slowly.
The moss, stone and twisting natural forms were important because they helped connect the man-made or magical structure to the forest. I did not want the shrine to appear newly placed. I wanted it to feel as though the forest had accepted it and grown around it for generations.
One of the ideas behind the painting is that something can be forgotten without losing its value. The relic is no longer surrounded by people or ceremony, but its light remains. It still exists. It still has meaning.
That is part of what makes fantasy painting so powerful for me. I can create places that do not exist in the ordinary world but still carry real emotion. A ruined shrine, a glowing sphere and an ancient forest can become a story about endurance, mystery, hope or rediscovery.
Moonwell Relic became the first painting entered into my permanent GS inventory system as GS-0001. That gives it a special place in the history of Gale’s Art Studio. It represents both the fantasy worlds I love to paint and the beginning of a more organized record of my work as an artist.
I hope viewers see more than a magical object when they look at it. I hope they feel as though they have stepped into the forest and found a light that has been waiting for them.
